Gender and the COVID-19 Pandemic

Review of Literature from Low and Middle Income Countries

The Center on Gender Equity and Health is conducting an ongoing review of emerging research on the gendered social, economic, and health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and response in low and middle-income countries.  Our review spans five focal areas critical to understanding the ways that the COVID-19 pandemic has, is, and will continue to affect the lives of women and girls around the world:

  1. Women and Girl’s Health and Health Providers
  2. Gender Norms and Gendered Social Outcomes
  3. Gendered Economic Impacts
  4. Women’s Leadership
  5. Women’s Collectives

We search for peer-reviewed articles, working papers, and manuscript pre-prints in the following six databases: EconLit, NBER, PsycInfo, PubMed, RePEc, and Web of Science.  Papers are reviewed if they contain empirical analyses, descriptions of their study and analytic methodology, and include COVID-19-related findings across one or more of the five focal areas for at least one low or middle-income country.  This summary page will be regularly updated, and we will share more in-depth analyses as they become available.
