The Internal Versus External Control of Reinforcement Scale

The Internal versus External Control of Reinforcement Scale (I-E scale) is a 29-item measure of an individual's generalized perception of control. The scale asks if a reward, or reinforcement, is contingent upon one's own behavior and characteristics (internal) or if it is a result of luck, chance, the control of others, and is unpredictable (external).

Instructions: This is a questionnaire to find out the way in which certain important events in our society affect different people. Each item consists of a pair of alternatives lettered a or b. Please select the one statement of each pair (and only one) which you more strongly believe to be more true rather than the one you think you should choose or the one you would like to be true.

b. The trouble with most children nowadays is that their parents are too easy with them.

Response Options:
* Items 1, 8, 14, 19, 24, and 27 are “filler” items and are included in order to make the purpose of the test more ambiguous.

Respondent chooses the statement (either A or B) that most closely matches their perception of control.

Scoring Procedures

This is a forced-choice questionnaire. The bolded choice is the external option and the total score is the sum of external choices selected. Six filler questions are included in order to make the purpose of the test more ambiguous. The lower the score, the more internal control is perceived while the higher the score the more external control is perceived.
