The following questions refer to your own personal experience of slow onset climate events. These events differ from the events we mentioned in the previous module as they typically take place over longer periods of time. In particular, I would like to understand if you have ever observed some of the following phenomena in the environment around you. For each phenomenon you have experienced, I will ask a series of questions. First, let's begin by understanding if you can remember living or working near a place (city, village, beach, field, etc.) where the following phenomena were apparent:

  • Increased temperature (sustained) (e.g. Temperatures are higher than they used to be years ago)
  • Drop in temperature (sustained) (e.g. Temperatures are lower than they used to be years ago)
  • Recurrent heat waves
  • Recurrent extreme cold events
  • Increased overall precipitation
  • Decreased overall precipitation
  • Desertification
  • Endemic insect borne disease (e.g. Malaria, Dengue, Zika, etc.)
  • Recurrent wildfires
  • Water scarcity (reduced availability over extended periods)
  • Rivercoast erosionsand encroachment and other permanent shallow geohazards
  • Increased frequency of animal death episodes (birds, land animals)
  • Increased frequency of animal death episodes (fish, seafood, freshwater animals, marine animals)
  • Loss of land and air biodiversity Depletion of species (land animals, birds, plants, trees, insects, mushrooms, seeds)
  • Loss of water biodiversity Depletion of species (fish, seafood, seaweed, coral bleaching, etc.)
  • Increasedfrequentchronic air pollution, haze, smoke
  • Increased ocean temperature
  • Sea level rise
  • Permanentfrequent flood (coastal, estuarine, groundwater flood, snowmelt flood, etc.)
  • Thawing of ice (glaciers, permafrost, other)
  • Increasing spread of pathogens (virus, bacteria)
  • Increase spread of parasites (human and animal)
  • Recurrent or chronic water pollution, including plastics (fresh water, marine, tap water, farming water)
  • Fresh water depletion
  • Eutrophication (higher than usual concentrations of nutrientsphytoplankton in fresh water)
  • Salinization of freshwater (aquifers, wells, etc.), sea water intrusion
  • Ocean acidification
  • Land degradation (eroded, polluted, salinized, less productive land or soil)
  • Sand mining
  • Deforestation, forest disturbances
  • Forest invasive species
  • Loss of mangroves
  • Ocean invasive species
  • Wetland lossdegradation
  • Permafrost loss
  • Runoff (non-point source pollution)
  • Recurrent insect pest infestation (e.g. locust, invasive weeds, invasive species)
  • Recurrent plant disease (bacterial, fungal, mycoplasma, etc.)
  • Recurrent animal or human disease (airborne, water borne, blood borne, etc.)
  • Specify other(s)
