The Sanitation Insecurity measure is a 50 item self-report measure that addresses women's negative experiences during sanitation-related activities using two modules: urination and defecation. This includes potential harms during sanitation (e.g., getting an infection or being harmed by another), social expectations (e.g., suppressing the urge to urinate due to workload), physical exertion or strain (e.g., withholding water to control one's urge to urinate), physical agility (e.g., having difficulty or pain squatting), nighttime sanitation concerns (e.g., the fear of ghosts), social support (e.g., leaving dependents to defecate), and defecation location (e.g., going far to defecate).
